Fleming News

So far this has been an excellent term for Fleming House. As always we have had students involved in many House and school events. We have also had some individual achievements to report. We raised HK$29,000 during Fleming charity week for our chosen charity, Katja House in Kathmandu. During CAS Fleming students joined others to visit the orphanage, spending the money on clothes, 2 toasters, perfume, deodorant and a bright red Fleming rubbish bin.

This term has seen Fleming come 1st overall in the Interhouse swimming competition and joint 2nd in the cross country event. Most of Fleming students competed in these events and showed impressive commitment and enthusiasm. Well done everyone!

In year 7 we have seen Nicole Fong gain the first bronze award in the school and Adrian Chui came 5th runner up in the 2011 Hong Kong Junior Chess Competition. In year 12 Audrey Chaytor and Dickson Wong were part of the Sedan Chair team who raced in October.

This term we have seen Annie Lye and Leah Metoudi both 12F selected as co-editors of this year’s Islander, I’m sure that they will do a fantastic job. Annie also achieved great success in a photography competition that was organized by the HKU Museum Society to commemorate the university’s centenary. Four of Annie’s photographs were selected for the exhibition, well Done Annie!

Daniel Lo and Jonathan Leung both of 13F organized this year’s Rainbow Trek which is a very demanding job but both really stepped up to the plate and did an outstanding job, well done guys!

In the Rainbow Trek Dickson Wong 12F came first in the individual student event and completed the 50km trek in 7 hours and 15. Mr. Chillingworth was the first member of staff to finish.
Nigvi Tam 12F achieved the Team Project Award for Engineering and Environment from HKUST Summer Institute Award Presentation Ceremony. Well done Nigvi!
I would also like to thank the House prefects in 13F for an excellent job last year and would also like to welcome our new 12F prefects: Senior Sports Prefects Audrey Chaytor and Dickson Wong, Senior Communication prefects Nigvi Tam and Michelle Kung, Senior Charity prefects Sian Robinson and Sara Kelly and general House prefects Tiffany Lau, Zoe Lau, Tom Kim, Judy Tam, Tina Chin, Leah Metoudi, Annie Lye, Sanneke Ros, Sakshi Bhatia, Suraj Mahbubani and Timothy Lim.
Well done to everyone in Fleming House for an excellent first term and here’s to an amazing 2012!

NANSEN BIATHLON AND OPENING OF THE TEXTILES ROOM

On Tuesday 20th September Nansen held their annual sponsored biathlon in memory of Amy Coxall and Gui Vezzaro. This involved members of the house participating in pairs, or as an individual, to complete the run to 2nd Pagoda, Bowen Road (2.5km) and 16 lengths. There were some great performances by the students and staff and results will be announced at a later date. We were particularly pleased to see so many of 7N participating as individuals.
Following the biathlon we had the official opening of the new Textiles room which is in memory of Amy Coxall as this was one of the subjects she was passionate about. Amy’s parents and brother Josh attended along with staff and students. There is a lovely picture of Amy in the room and a large decorative glass panel containing one of Amy’s designs. Simply a great room, airy and light….all the working conditions Amy loved. Thanks to Claire Tait and ESF for all their hard work in creating this new Textiles environment. Existing funds and money raised through the biathlon will be used to purchase other pieces of equipment required for this room.
When you visit school please take some time to view the new bench to the right of the main entrance. A huge thank you to Matt Smith and the Technology department for the time spent designing and making the bench in memory of Amy and Gui. Students, staff and members of Amy’s family have also decorated pebbles/stones which are underneath the bench. This area is in front of Amy’s tree which was planted last year and is continuing to flourish.
All in all a really positive lovely afternoon and celebration in memory of Amy and Gui.
Amy and Gui, you are missed but always in our hearts and thoughts.

Fleming Charity Week

Fleming’s proud association with Katja house is long standing. For those of you new to the House this is an orphanage in Nepal that was set up and run by Island School. It has provided shelter for about 60 children whose ages range from 4-18. We have had a fun filled week without forgetting that we are raising money for a charity close to our hearts.
Under the guidance of our Heads of House, Mrs. Worthington and Mr. Tudor and with the support of the Fleming form tutors, the help of 12F charity prefects and with everyone in the house pitching in, this has been a very successful week. The 2011 charity week has been one of our best ever. It kicked off with a Dress Red Day, followed by the entire House forming a giant letter ‘F’ for Fleming on the green area. 7F took part in a Sponsored Silence for a whole school day, which was challenging but also created a quieter environment around school. 8F really enjoyed sponging the teachers. Mrs. Worthington, Mr. Tudor, Mrs. Boag, Mr. Nicholls, Mr. Rutter and Mr. Reed all kindly volunteered to be hit with soggy sponges to raise money. 9F treated the school to a delicious bake sale; we could have some budding Jamie Olivers or Nigella Lawsons there! 10F cooled down in the pool for their Sponsored Swim whilst 11F baked in the sun for their Sponsored Run with Mrs. Worthington. The grand finale of the week was the Fleming Carnival which involved 12F and 13F working collaboratively to put together a fun and lively afternoon which included balloon drops, tie dyeing, pizza sales and rousing vocals from Fleming students.
In the weeks to come we look forward to our Fleming prefects, who are travelling to Katja House during CAS week, reporting back on their experiences and hearing how the money will be utilized. Mrs. Worthington and Mr. Tudor would like to thank all Fleming students and staff for their energy, enthusiasm and support with the Fleming charity week. The week has so far raised an amazing  HK$28,000. Well done Fleming!!!!

adidas Cup

The U14 "Islanders Team" took part in the adidas U15 cup on Saturday. They progressed from a tough group (which included Rangers) on goal difference and faced arch rivals 'Lucky Mile' in the round of 16. A Colin Ross penalty in the sudden death shoot out sent them through to the quarter finals where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Tsuen Wan.
The team were: Colin Ross, Joe Stuart, Rohit Daswani, Jeff Chan, Jack Li, James Chan, Adam Chillingworth, Alfred Poon (C) and Daniel Cavalcante-Chung.
Well done to the team on their great effort in this tough competition. Mention should be made of Adrian Leung who was unwell on the day but who had trained with the team.

ESF U13 v HK U13 Kowloon Tsai Park 13th April

This close and entertaining match ended 2-2.

Well done to the all the Island School boys who played: Aaron Stanyard, Mark Swainston, Rory Lonergan, George Wyatt, Michael Slavin, Ben Sargant and Robbie Stamp, who scored the first goal.

This is Jim's report:

Wednesday 13th April 2011, saw this seasons ESF Representative U13 squad compete against the Hong Kong Football Association U13 team at Kowloon Tsai Sports Ground.

The players selected to represent ESF were all born in 1998 or 1999 (with 2 born in 1997) and had been nominated by their ESF High School or College, or were a member of the ESF Lions Football Development Programme.

From the previous match against Hong Kong in December, the ESF squad had lost influential Captain Tiger Mertens, as well as four other members of the squad, so for some players it was their debut for the representative squad against Hong Kong.

The taller and physically stronger Hong Kong team started the game looking composed and expecting to push forward at every opportunity, showing good quality on the ball, which, as in the previous game, meant the ESF team spending the first ten minutes chasing the ball around, so it was a bit of a surprise when, with our first real attack, Robbie Stamp (IS) put ESF one nil up after converting a chance made from a through ball.

Following the goal, the Hong Kong team, despite being considerably bigger than the ESF players, struggled to gain a real foothold in the game, with the result being the match being played in the middle of the park, with little goalmouth action, but what there was bought two great saves from the ESF goalkeeper Daniel Tjong (SIS), one of our two 97 players.

When the Hong Kong team did manage to get the ball forward, the ESF defence of Sam Down (KGV), Michael Slavin (IS), Ben Sargeant (IS) and George Wyatt (IS), always had enough quality and pace to deal with any threat.

After thirty minutes, coach Jim Hackett started making changes to the playing line up, with Isaac Kam (STC) and Felipe Roberston (ESF Lions) coming on in place of Rory Lonergan (IS) and Robbie Stamp (IS). At the same time, Hong Kong changed their whole team, which meant our players who had worked hard in the first period had to keep their efforts high to deal with the fresh players, and our midfield players Ollie Laxton (KGV), Jake Smith (KGV) and Mark Swainston (IS) kept operating at maximum in order to deal with their counterparts. Unfortunately, right at the end of the second period, Hong Kong, having never looked liked scoring managed to capatilise on a rare mistake by our defence and in the fading light, their strikers shot entered our net, so it was one each going into the final period.

With other changes taking place, which allowed Aaron Stanyard (IS) to make his debut, the majority of the game continued to be played in the middle of the park, where constant tinkering with players, in order to keep the energy levels going and ensure everyone made a telling contribution, meant that there was little cohesion from either side and it was during this period that Hong Kong took the lead with another opportunist goal that came from a defensive slip.

At this point, ESF would have been expected to drop their heads and give in to the obvious tiredness, however, the goal seemed to rejuvenate the squad, (and parents), and with 10 minutes left, the ESF players began to lay siege to the Hong Kong goal, with two excellent chances being missed, and just when it appeared the game had gone the way of Hong Kong, a superb through ball from Mark Swainston put Josh Edwards in with a shooting chance, which Josh converted, much to the delight of all the players and parents of the ESF squad.

From the restart, the referee allowed the first kick, then blew his whistle for full time, meaning the game ended up at two goals each. Probably a fair result when assessing the whole 90 minutes.

Following the game, Coaches Jim Hackett, Amro Abbas and James Daws were full of praise for all the players, highlighting the performance, energy and team spirit above the result, as it was these factors that led to the result.

There then followed the opportunity for the large following of parents to take photographs and enjoy the result with the players.

The ESF Representative U13 Squad for this match was made up of the following players:

Island School:
Michael Slavin
Ben Sargeant
Mark Swainston
Robbie Stamp
George Wyatt
Rory Lonergan
Aaron Stanyard

Shatin College:
Joe Heaton
Isaac Kam

KGV:
Jake Smith
Ollie Laxton
Sam Down
Josh Edwards

South Island School
Daniel Tjong

ESF Lions:
Felipe Robertson "
